Cyn Taylor shows off her broad range of writing talent with Killers of Light. It's a relatively short book, and it moves very fast. There are no wasted words or dead spots in the tale. I really enjoyed it. It has very realistic, three-dimensional characters at its center that make you care about what happens next. More peripheral characters are, of course, shallower, but that works just fine in a story with this kind of pace and focus. There are classic sci-fi elements here that really made me like the story. I saw flickers of Stranger Things, The Twilight Zone, and even the nefarious Borg from Star Trek. No, Taylor doesn't rip those elements off from other creators. Rather, she employs all the things that make those concepts work--all the drama, mystery, and subtle complexity--and blends them into ideas within a story that is all her own. You won't be saying, "Hey, I've seen this before." You'll be saying, "Hey, that's kind of the same direction of thought I saw happening with <insert name of other brilliant work here>." It's sort of how E.T. and Close Encounters of the Third Kind are both first contact sci-fi stories, but they are completely different at the same time. It's a little hard to explain, but if you read this book (and you should), you will see what I mean. Great fun. Highly recommended.
